THE BASILICA: ART AND HISTORY

Basilica

FROM THE LATE FOURTH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT

Founded by Ambrose in honour of the martyrs Protasius and Gervasius in the area of the old necropolis west of the city, over the centuries, the Basilica played a fundamental role in the construction of the spiritual and civil identity of Milan.

THE MONUMENTAL COMPLEX

Now in one of the city’s central quarters, the Basilica was outside the walls until the nineteenth century, in the middle of a network of small churches that in part still stand today.

AMBROSE, BISHOP AND PATRON SAINT OF MILAN

Ambrose, bishop of Milan (374–397), was a leading figure in a difficult period of transition from the legacy of imperial Rome to the new Christian era. A learned interpreter of the Holy Scriptures and an attentive pastor sensitive to the needs of his flock, he left a profound mark on the Church of Milan, which took the name Ambrosian Church and retains its own liturgical rite. Ambrose is one of the four Fathers of the Western Church (figures considered of fundamental importance for the Christian faith), along with his contemporaries Jerome and Augustine and Pope Gregory the Great.
